WriCampia Dance: A Night of Questing and Costumes! by Norah Schechter, age 12, and Yearly WriCampian Staff

As campers arrived to this year’s annual dance, they were greeted with a playlist of fun beats like “Dancing Queen,” “Defying Gravity,” and even some classics from Hannah Montana, which guaranteed that every camper could find a song that suited their taste. Best of all, energetic songs such as “HOT TO GO!” kept the crowd bopping along with enthusiasm.

The display of costumes was a highlight. Campers and counselors showed up dressed in extraordinary homemade outfits, transforming the field house into a brand-new fantasy world. Middle Camper Jackson donned a huge pride flag as a cape, declaring that he was “On A Quest to End Homophobia.” He also dyed his hair purple, commitment shining. Niko T., embodying Galinda from “Wicked,” twirled around with flair, while Instructor Jem amazed everyone as a fierce dragon. Sully S. took it to the next level as a Moon Wizard, proving that his creativity knows no bounds, even claiming to belong to the “Cult of John,” where he playfully pretended to sacrifice unbelievers! He even told this reporter to “add me in the article or else I’ll sacrifice you to Saint John!” This reporter decided to take no chances.

Throughout the evening, campers entertained each other by offering quests. It was inspiring to see everyone engaging in this whimsical element, further showing the sense of teamwork that WriCampia encourages. Many took their quests very seriously, while others added humor to theirs. This led to spontaneous minute-long competitions across the dance floor.

Of course, no major event would be complete without a few funny quotes from our campers that summed up the whole experience. Leila S. comically described the evening ambiance as “very loud and annoying, like my brother,” eliciting laughs from those nearby. John brought in some humor by saying the vibe was “very gay,” which highlighted the incredible sense of acceptance of diversity across the spectrum of gender and sexuality at WriCampia. Instructor Lil even joked about pulling a muscle during the “Cotton Eye Joe” line dance.

As the night wore on, campers formed a runway to show off their cool costumes and channel their inner model. Many shared in the laughter and excitement of their friends strutting their stuff. When Mabel the Unicorn made an appearance and rocked out to “Pink Pony Club,” everyone went wild.

In a climactic moment that happened after some campers had already left for Late Nights, “Bohemian Rhapsody” began playing. Every WriCampian still in the Field House clasped hands and spread into a giant circle, screaming the lyrics and occasionally doing the wave.

Last Thursday’s dance was a beautiful exploration of community and fun. While some senior campers were frustrated that they didn’t get to contribute song requests the way they have in years past, overall, it was a lovely night.

Senior Camper Thúy H.-V. reflected on the rhapsodic Queen circle. “It was amazing. It was the best part. Usually when everyone dances, everyone dances in their own little group. But everyone was doing it. And we were all unified.” ✎
