Every year since 2022, I’ve written about the Gaga Ball Pit near Lower and Middle Camp. But now that I’m an Upper Camper, I live in Acres—meaning that I need to write the first ever article on the Pavilion.
For those who don’t know, the Pavilion is an open-air building at the center of Acres. While Acres has a basketball court, slip-n-slide, volleyball court, and baseball field, its most frequented hangout spot is the Pavilion. This is thanks to the many games found inside of the Pavilion, including three Ping Pong tables, an air hockey table, and an arcade-esque mini basketball hoop. Connected to the Pavilion is also a gym decked out with weights, benches, and other equipment.
The Pavilion has been used as a gathering place for Upper and Senior campers alike. It’s a place to play Magic the Gathering and even has a TV (The Yearly WriCampian neither recommends nor advises the use of said TV). Despite the mini basketball hoop breaking and air hockey pucks disappearing—forcing campers to use their hands instead—the Pavilion remains the hottest place in Acres.
Looking back to the Gaga Ball Pit in Lower and Middle Camp, I can now see that it served the same purpose as the Pavilion: a place to make friends, spend time with your bunkmates, and create new memories. As I walk past it on the way back up to Acres, I see Lower and Middle Campers enjoying the same game I once did: smiling the same way, making the same connections. Hopefully, one day, they will do the same in Upper Camp—in the Pavilion.
