New Faces: Nate by Tess Berland, age 13

Sometimes it’s hard to break the awkward silence of meeting someone new. This was not the case with Nate Edward IV, new WriCampia counselor this summer. “I bring my sense of humor everywhere I go, it’s like an icebreaker,” said Nate as we sat down in the Welcome Center.

In this interview, Nate somehow managed to make me laugh with almost every answer he shared. He was cracking jokes the whole time.

A new counselor, Nate wanted to come to WriCampia because he likes traveling to new places, being immersed in nature, and the opportunity to be paid while doing both.

We all laughed. “Laughing is like medicine for the soul,” he said.

When asked what his favorite part of the WriCampia community was, he responded with how he loved the kids: their smarts and creativity have inspired him to pursue more creative endeavors.

If Nate had to pick one track to be involved in, he said he would want to do Sports or Filmmaking, because he is an actor and an athlete in almost every sport – not to mention a comedian and a writer, which is why I asked him what he thought the difference was between comedy writing and other genres. He told me about how comedy writing follows a certain structure or format, which sets it apart from more free-flowing genres.

Nate’s daily schedule at home is made up of many active pastimes. This includes working out, writing, and, he said, most importantly, “I like to learn new things.” He likes to learn at least one new thing a day. However, he told me that during his free time at camp, he likes to be in his bunk alone, a break from all of his social life.

Our interview was coming to an end. So I asked him if he wanted to add anything else. He did: “I will always have a good memory of WriCampia and I’m thankful to have met so many amazing campers and counselors.” ✎
