Arts Track: Spotlight on Nico Bachman by Tallulah Conolly-Smith, age 16

Start

Step into the art shack and, more than likely, you’ll find Upper Camper Nico B. in the back left corner, working at the sewing machine. When I sat down with them, they were just starting to gather materials for a new skirt, picking out fabrics in rich shades of burgundy. This is their third year at WriCampia, and since they arrived, improving their sewing has been their primary focus. “My goal in general is to refine the skills I already have, and learn new ones,” Nico shared. This past week, for example, they learned how to hem properly. When asked about specific aims for the summer, they listed making dresses for a friend’s film, and putting together Halloween costumes for themself and their sister.

Although they have a sewing machine at home, they value this time in particular: they don’t take sewing classes outside of camp, so this is where they really hone in on developing their technique. Nico applies what they learned here all year long. They get most of their clothes thrifting–another passion–and frequently modify the clothes they thrift. “And I’m interested in all sorts of art,” they told me. “But here, making clothing is my main priority.” Nico continued to explain that WriCampia is where they sew because “the camp community is nice, and I feel like the sewing corner is my own space. I really like working there.” During our interview, they helped multiple other campers find things while simultaneously answering questions, and it became clear that they are a key part of the art shack’s ecosystem. When asked if their camp experience could be improved, they laughed. “The machines are a little…” they paused, searching for the right word. “Sassy.”

Their work, alongside the amazing artistry of everyone else in Arts Track, was on display on Wednesday the 20th in Dance Studio 2. ✎
