During this interview, I gained a new friend: Ella Davis. Ella is a lovely person who cares deeply about her campers. When asked about her favorite aspects of being a counselor, she responded instantly. “I love my campers, and I love dancing.”
Ella recently started university and is on her school’s rowing team, which takes up the majority of her time. She’s majoring in English, but joked that “I’m basically majoring in rowing.”
WriCampia just so happens to be one of Ella’s favorite places. She’s been a camper here since 2014, and a counselor since this year. Tracks were only instituted four years ago, so they were not a big part of her camp experience. When they did come to prominence, she participated in the Songwriting Track. She didn’t go there to write songs; she would write whatever she was working on in workshop. She just went there to be surrounded by music, though she did end up teaching herself guitar. She says WriCampia gave her “a place to come out of my shell in a way I couldn’t do at school or at home.”
Another aspect of WriCampia that Ella appreciates is the friends she’s made. In her favorite memory of camp, she had thought that one of her best friends had “Covid and couldn’t come to camp. All of a sudden, we heard their voice on the phone.”
It turns out it was a false alarm! “An hour later,” Ella continued. “We heard a knock at our workshop door. We opened it and it was our best friend standing there. We were overjoyed because we got to spend our last senior year together.”
The short of it is, Ella Davis is an amazing counselor who brings her bubbly personality wherever she goes. She is an amazing role model to her campers and it’s clear everyone looks up to her. ✎
