Drive-In: Come, Sit, Stay Awhile by Teagan Arnold, age 10

New York, NY– We sat on the top of the car and watched the movie on a big screen with blankets and pillows. My friend and I listened to the movie on the radio in the car. Instead of going to the movie theater, and to be safe, we went to a drive-in movie theater! They took off in the late 1950s and became a big thing after that. Since we are stuck in our house, and we want to get out but be safe, the drive-in has been a relief during COVID-19.

I loved a lot about it, like we got to listen to the movie on the radio and just had a lot of fun. But some down sides were that the weather was bad and it was hard to try to keep the radio on but turn the headlights off. These are things that everyone can relate to. We went to The Gateway Drive-In on Long Island and we loved it!

On the New York skyline, Skyline Drive-In NYC is a unique drive-in cinema experience at 1 Oak Street. According to their website, they state that “Our location, situated on the East River with killer views of the Manhattan Skyline may seem familiar to you. Perhaps you’ve seen it on SNL?” The view is amazing!  More and more people come every week. A lot of people love this idea and think it is a relief during COVID-19, especially parents.

My friend Charlie went to a drive-in movie. She is 8 years old and she loves movies! “I think a lot more people will be going to drive-ins now during covid. It’s much safer to be in your own car then go to a movie theatre. It was very different from inside a movie theater, but really fun,”  she said. Hopefully, in the future, more and more people will enjoy drive-in movies and love it just as much.

Make sure you stay safe, avoid movie theaters, and wear a mask. Even if “all of this” were not happening, I would still love to go to drive-in movies! I really enjoyed it as a way to stay safe and have fun! Next time you see an open drive-in, pull up!
